Marfa TX to Marathon TX

 Thursday March 31st

Today started out chilly, 46 degrees but clear and minimal wind compared with the previous 2 days.  Scenery was typical once again.  We are still riding along at altitudes ranging from 4,500-5,000 feet on several occasions as we proceed thru a section of mountains.  These 2 horses were the only living critters passed today. 

When we entered the town of Alpine, our first Sag stop, we were told to wait at least 30 minutes before proceeding. There was a horrific vehicle accident a few miles down the road, all traffic stopped and helicopter ambulances were summoned.  We took advantage of the delay and stopped for cinnamon rolls and coffee.  Later at the scene, it appeared that one vehicle failed to stop at a yield sign and was T-boned by a pickup truck.  Both vehicles were demolished. 

I arrived at camp, the 1st rider,  shortly after 12:30 and many tents had been placed but not staked down.  Suddenly a little twister popped up and half a dozen tents flew right up off the ground and headed across the campgrounds.  We quickly put a piece of luggage into each tent to keep them grounded.

Another day in the books.  What a great day to ride 57.4 miles with a total ascent of 1,141 feet.  Average speed was 14.4 and I burned 2,357 calories.  Tomorrow is a rest day, so no blog. Saturday we head to Sanderson TX.
