Marathon TX to Sanderson TX

 Saturday April 2nd

A little warmer this morning at breakfast, but still dark until sunup at about 7:40 AM.  Everyone seems to be getting onboard with the 8 AM starts.  It warms up quickly and we are anxious to get as many miles behind us before the sun is overhead.

The trip mascot Rosie the Road Runner.  I was assigned as her caretaker today. Stupid bird! This duty wasn't in my contract with Timberline Cycling?

This machine was digging a ditch to lay fiber optic cable.  Creating a dust storm that could be seen for miles. We have been biking on US 90 for the past several days.  Sometimes a half hour might pass between vehicle spotting.

Arrived at our destination, Sanderson TX right at noon today.  This restaurant was recommended, and of course the only one in town.  The waitresses were “open carrying” so you don't complain when your burger is badly overcooked and it was.

Air mattresses stacked, waiting for customers.  The “goat heads” along the road have attacked our bike tires and also punctured the floors of our tents and then the mattress inside.  I had 2 mattress failures yesterday.  Rumor is its time for cots in the tents instead of these light duty air mattresses. And we are sleeping in the High School - a clean sparkling floor, a real treat.  So a great day to ride.  56 miles at an average speed of 14.4 mph.  742 feet ascending, a nice downhill finish, we are about 1,300’ lower at our finish compared to the start.  Expecting each day to be a little warmer as we approach the middle of Texas.  I burned 2,122 calories today.  Dinner & Breakfast are provided by a consortium of the local churches that are located around the school area.  Tomorrow we ride to Comstock TX, 80+ miles-a long day!
