Brackettville TX to Rio Frio TX

 Tuesday April 5th



Nice pleasant morning leaving Fort Clark.  There haven't been a lot of noteworthy West Texas scenic kind of things to photograph so I have to work at it.  We had lunch here in Uvalde, birthplace of Matthew McConaughey.  He was not spotted on our ride through town. Shortly after lunch my bike started making funny noises whenever I coasted above 20 mph.  I determined it was coming from the gear cassette area at back wheel.  If I kept pedals spinning the noise stopped.  So for the rest of the day, no coasting and kept pedaling even going downhill.  Normally downhill is a good time to take the pressure off the backside, but I couldn't as the sound was horrendous and the thought of a rear wheel lockup wasn't pleasant. 


One of the more affluent looking ranches behind fellow coaster Brian. We are also going through an area of private hunting camp / preserves.  You pay your money and get to hunt some critter and be back at the lodge/spa before lunch.  They will forward your trophy to you after it is properly mounted.  Today is the last day before another rest day.  The past 4 days have been particularly difficult, high miles and of course our favorite headwinds. 





We get to stay in a small “resort” on the Rio Frio river, many small cabins, all with air conditioning, and up to 4 beds each.  Very comfortable for us coming from tents and gymnasiums.  A/C was very welcome on this 95 degree day!   It was just too hot outside for me so I read and worked on a plan to fix my bike. The winds were light today, but the sun was unrelenting.  Distance today was 74.4 miles at an avg speed of 14.1 climbing 2,255 feet and burned 2,637 calories.  I drank what seemed like several gallons of water, chocolate milk, soda and 1 beer.

Thursday March 17th Hoeing veggies by hand One of our Sag stops, usually two of these on a typical day. Snacks, beverage and tortilla wraps with bananas, apples, Nutella or Peanut Butter.  This machine-handles just picked, sometimes washes, and packed into crates/boxes I dont know what citrus these trees were, but they were all flat topped.  Arrival yesterday at Dateland, after consuming my date shake.  One of the many cattle feedlots.  Another different style harvesting machine, still very labor intensive.  Thursday mornings sunrise as we were getting ready to leave Dateland.    Trying to limit myself to one beer a day.  Doing ok so far, but 8 weeks is a long time.  Tonights accommodations at a public school in Gila Bend AZ Last night cooled off pleasantly, but if you didn't fall asleep quickly you might have been awakened by trains and highway traffic all night.  I was ok until about 4 AM, couldn't fall back asleep due to outside noise...

DeRidder LA to Mamou LA

 Saturday April 16th A good nights sleep in a hotel helps get us going in the morning.  Forecast is the same as the last few days, possibility of showers, and thunderstorm's after noon.  All of the creeks and small rivers that we crossed today are running over their banks.  Makes sense as I have read that the lower Mississippi is at flood stage.  Maybe we will get lucky and have a campsite flooded out and be forced into another hotel night.  These are crawfish farms/bogs.  There wasn't a lot of activity, the season is winding down.  Next I believe they plant rice, then when the rice is harvested, switch back to crawfish for the fall/winter-season. I rode about 25-30 miles with crawfish ponds on both sides of the road.   This is the crawfish harvester.  That big wheel at the rear rests on the bottom of the bog and propels the machine thru the bog, somehow scooping up the crawfish.     Apparently our leader made a change in our s...
