Calexico CA to Yuma AZ

Tuesday March 15th

We had another 10 miles biking along I-8 this morning.  These are sand dunes, lots of special dune buggies driving on them and what also looked like a Mini van next to that telephone pole that was stuck and the guys were trying to get it out.

Not a lot of exciting sightseeing today.  As we were approaching our accommodations for tonight we came across what appeared to be picking and boxing lettuce.  We had the Deputy City Mgr of Yuma speak to us after dinner about the local area.  He said from October-March, the Yuma area supplies the US with their greens, lettuce, beets, chard, etc and I saw a couple of runaway celery bunches along the highway. The Mexicans travel between Yuma and Salinas CA depending on what crops are being harvested.
There were a lot of sightseers watching the event.  This was a really big field that was probably harvested entirely today. Maybe these were family members waiting to pick up workers.
I believe that this is the Colorado river which defines the border between CA & AZ.  There are many irrigation canals needed to supply all of the farmers in the area.

Dinner tonight. Chicken Salad, Shrimp Salad,Bean Salad and Pasta Salad.  I did a repeat on this plate. Don't want to wake up hungry at midnight like yesterday. My Garmin GPS unit said that I burned 2,644 calories today, so it was okay to enjoy a Haagen-Dazs bar for desert.  It was a good riding day today. Arrived at our 65 mile destination at about 2PM. Only 1,014 feet of climbing, average speed of 13 and it did reach 90 degrees, but I finished in a faster time than 2 years ago, similar to most days so far on the route. Calories burned were 2644. Tomorrow we ride to Dateland AZ.
